About Green & Black’s
Craig Sams and Jo Fairley, a married couple, started Green & Black’s in London in 1991. In 1969, Craig established Britain’s first natural food store, making him a forerunner in the organic movement. While looking for organic peanuts, he stumbled onto the precursor to Green & Black’s: organic cocoa. He had a sample of organic chocolate made with 70% cocoa, real vanilla, and other fine ingredients made especially for him. Unique in the United Kingdom. Jo, being a journalist, saw the need of bringing this chocolate to consumers. The color green represents their dedication to using only organic materials that are obtained in a responsible manner. The dark color of their chocolate reflects the high percentage of cocoa solids that gives it its signature rich flavor. Green & Blacks has always been about the taste. They’ve been firm in their conviction that nature provides the best ingredients since they opened in 1991. Their ingredients’ unparalleled depth and richness of flavor comes from the organic soil they were grown in, which also benefits the environment. Fairtrade International has validated the quality of their organic chocolate. They are pleased to announce that Maya Gold chocolate was the first in the United Kingdom to receive the Fairtrade certification in 1994. A Belizean Mayan beverage made with cocoa and spices served as inspiration for the bar. They used a combination of dark chocolate, orange, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a touch of vanilla to replicate the bar’s flavor.
